Two rainy days

One minute of reconciliation is worth more than a whole life of friendship.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 100 Years of Solitude

Everyone is amazed that it’s rained most consistently for two days.  Dripping is everywhere.  The casita has a damp chill to it.  Before the rains came I hung my laundry yesterday in the utility room with the hope of avoiding the use of the gas dryer, but everything was damp when I checked it last night and again this morning and I finally used the dryer.  The rain has made me think of books that feature rain, like Tom Robbins’ Still Life with Woodpecker and Marquez’s work.

The 1969 version of The Thomas Crown Affair was on television last night and that reminded me of director Norman Jewison’s movie Rollerball.  A synopsis of the plot:

In the year 2018 violence has been outlawed and corporations have replaced government as the ruling party following the demise of politics. With the absence of war or conflict, a forcibly passive population’s bloodlust is satisfied by a brutal new sport known as Rollerball…
