Piñatas

The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.

Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray

In a way, Wilde was paraphrasing Martin Luther who wrote

Whenever the devil harasses you, seek the company of men or drink more, or joke and talk nonsense, or do some other merry thing. Sometimes we must drink more, sport, recreate ourselves, and even sin a little to spite the devil,

Las Posadas has begun and so it’s piñata season and the piñata is the playing out of temptation (the treats inside the evil pot) and faith (the blindfold).  Versions of the game have been found in China, Italy and Spain before the game found its way to Mexico, where Catholic monks used it to replace the mid-December Aztec celebration of the birth of Huitzilopochtli (the deity of war, sun and sacrifice).
