There is a magic made by melody:
A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool
Heart, that sinks through fading colors deep
To the subaqueous stillness of the sea,
And floats forever in a moon-green pool,
Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep.
from I Am In Need Of Music, Elizabeth Bishop
I met four of my classes today and even the weakest of the students seemed so very capable that this will not feel like teaching ESL or EFL – it is going to feel like teaching a traditional English course to some very bright young people. They read with comprehension, think quickly, speak as well as many native-speaking adults and a surprising number of the students had no trace of an accent. This was not what I expected – I think there’s a level of excellence at work here that’s not known in other places.
When introducing themselves, many listed music as one of their interests.
