Saturday (Paris)

Born of the sun they travelled a short while towards the sun,
And left the vivid air signed with their honour.

Stephen Spender, from I Think Continually

In the park

La Joconde (Mona Lisa)

The museum was extremely crowded and all those bodies made it almost uncomfortably warm. There was the usual crowd near the Mona Lisa and it seemed most people were there not to see the painting, but to take a photograph of it or of themselves with the painting in the background.

In L’Orangerie

There was a lot of shushing by the security guards in the first of the two rooms that house Monet’s Water Lillies.  The room is supposed to be a quiet contemplative space, but folks just couldn’t stop talking about their photos.
